Hartridge Buddhist Monastery Upottery Honiton Devon EX14 9QE
If coming by car, please be aware that satnavs are sometimes unreliable on the small lanes close to the monastery. Please use the approach roads described below:
South/Westbound by Car: 500 metres south of A303 - A30 junction turn right, following sign to Upottery. Turn left at memorial in front of the church, then drive 900m towards Rawridge. Before first house in Rawridge turn right into New Road (‘no through road’), also signposted ‘Otter Falls’. Continue straight up for 1.5 km, through a farm, after which you will see the monastery sign straight ahead. We are about 400m along the track.
North/Eastbound by Car: Keep on the A30 past Honiton. 1.5 km past Monkton, take left turn for Rawridge. Drive 2.6 km to just beyond last house in Rawridge, and look for partially-obscured road on left (New Road), also signposted ‘Otter Falls’, with ‘no through road’ sign set well back. Continue straight up for 1.5 km, through a farm, after which you will see the monastery sign straight ahead. We are about 400m along the track.
Public transport: You can get a train or bus to Honiton, but from there the options are very limited. The most convenient, and expensive, is to take a taxi (the monastery is approximately five miles). Chris's Taxi is run by a friend of the monastery (yes, he's called Chris) and he will give a reduced fare for anyone coming here - call 07964 098334 - however he no longer lives locally and so he is less often available to come. There used to be a County Council subsidised taxi service but this has now ceased. There is a bus from Honiton or Taunton (the Dartline #387) which operates once a day (10am from Honiton, 13.25 from Taunton) on Mondays and Thursdays only and stops at Rawridge, about a mile or so away - you can walk the last bit. Similarly on Tuesdays only at 10.29 and 13.29 from Honiton the Redwoods #682 will stop at Rawridge. A more frequent bus (Stagecoach #20) runs a different route between Honiton and Taunton on weekdays, with the nearest stop to us at Combe Raleigh Turn, which is 3.7 miles away. Walking from Honiton itself is 4.6 miles, but there is a stretch of a few hundred metres outside Honiton which is along quite a busy road and there is no pavement.
